What it is
The Yamaha DX7, released in 1983, is the digital FM synthesizer that defined the sound of the mid-1980s and became one of the best-selling synths ever made. Its six-operator FM engine produced the glassy electric pianos, bright basses, and bell tones that saturate the era's records, and it was among the first affordable fully digital, fully MIDI synths — which is a big part of why it sold in the hundreds of thousands. Programming it from the front panel is famously unintuitive, but its factory and cartridge sounds alone earned it a permanent place in studios.
Buying one used — what to check
The DX7 is digital, so it sidesteps analog tuning drift, but it has its own age issues. The original DX7's battery backs up patch memory and eventually dies — a cheap fix, but a dead battery plus lost patches is common; the membrane buttons can get unresponsive; and the notoriously fragile early data cartridges and their contacts often fail. Test the buttons, the output for noise, and ideally patch storage. Note the family: the original DX7, the DX7II (DX7S and DX7IID), and later variants differ, and the small FB-01, the TX-series, and the reface DX share the engine but aren't the same instrument — read titles carefully.
Regional sourcing notes
The DX7 is Yamaha, Japanese-built and sold in huge numbers, so Japan's used market is deep and often cheap — Yahoo Auctions, Mercari, and Hard Off regularly list them, frequently below Western prices. Domestic units are 100V and need a transformer abroad. In Japanese listings search ヤマハ (Yamaha) and DX7, and read condition terms — 動作確認済み (tested working), 整備済み (serviced), 美品 (excellent), against ジャンク (junk) and 未確認 (untested); on a DX7 junk often just means a dead memory battery, which can make for a bargain if you're willing to service it. Brrtz scans Japanese and Western sources at once so a cheap, clean domestic unit shows up alongside local options.
