What it is
The Roland TR-909 Rhythm Composer, released in 1983 as the successor to the 808, married analog-synthesized drums (its punchy kick, snappy snare, and toms) with short samples for the hi-hats and cymbals. Commercially it fared little better than the 808 at launch — and then became the rhythmic engine of techno and house, its kick and hats defining whole genres. It also added MIDI and DIN sync, making it far easier to integrate than its predecessor.
Buying one used — what to check
As with the 808, the first job is separating an original from its many descendants: Roland's TR-09 (Boutique) and TR-8S emulate the 909 digitally, and Behringer's RD-9 is an analog clone — none are a vintage 909, and titles blur the line. On a genuine unit, expect the usual age issues — aging capacitors, scratchy pots and faders, worn switches, and tired trigger contacts — plus the sample-based voices' aging voice ROMs, which are generally reliable but worth confirming. A recent service or recap is a real plus; ask whether all voices trigger cleanly and the sequencer holds patterns.
