What it is

The Roland SH-101, released in 1982, is a monophonic analog synth that punches far above its modest size. A single oscillator with sub-oscillator, a punchy filter, an onboard sequencer and arpeggiator, and an optional modulation grip that let it be worn like a keytar made it a favorite for basslines, leads, and acid — and its bright, direct sound keeps it in constant demand. Roland sold it in grey, red, and blue, and the colored versions carry a small premium among collectors.

Buying one used — what to check

The SH-101 is relatively robust, but age still shows up in the usual analog places: scratchy sliders and pots, worn keyboard contacts, and occasionally a flaky sequencer or battery-related memory issues. Test the sequencer and arpeggiator thoroughly, confirm the sub-oscillator and filter respond smoothly, and check the pitch bender. Behringer's MS-1 is a well-regarded modern clone with the same core voice, so make sure a listing is actually an original SH-101 and not a clone. The detachable mod grip and matching strap are frequently missing — nice to have, but not essential to the instrument.

Regional sourcing notes

As a Roland classic the SH-101 is plentiful in Japan and often keenly priced on Yahoo Auctions and Mercari, including the sought-after red and blue variants. Domestic units are 100V and need a transformer abroad. In Japanese listings search ローランド (Roland) and SH-101, and read the condition terms — 動作確認済み (tested working), 整備済み (serviced), 美品 (excellent), against ジャンク (junk) and 未確認 (untested). Because the colored versions are described with Japanese color words as often as not, a single-region Latin-script search misses part of the market — Brrtz scans Japanese and Western sources together to close that gap.
