What it is

The Roland Jupiter-8, introduced in 1981, is Roland's flagship vintage polysynth and one of the most coveted analog instruments ever built. Eight voices, two oscillators each, a flexible dual-filter design, and a famously lush, wide sound made it a staple of 1980s records, and clean originals now command serious money. It's big, heavy, and gorgeous — a centerpiece instrument rather than a utility box — and later units added the DCB interface that MIDI kits can build on.

Buying one used — what to check

At Jupiter-8 prices, condition and completeness dominate the decision. Vintage units need periodic service: expect potential issues with the many sliders and switches, aging power supplies, voice-board calibration, and the membrane-style panel. Ask about recent servicing, whether all eight voices are calibrated and stable, and whether any MIDI retrofit (the original has no MIDI) has been professionally installed. Roland's modern Jupiter-8 emulations — plug-outs and reissue-style hardware — are excellent but are not the vintage instrument, so read listing titles carefully. Given the values, insist on thorough photos and a clear account of any repairs.

Regional sourcing notes

The Jupiter-8 is Japanese-built, and while never common, it does appear on Yahoo Auctions and through Japanese dealers, sometimes in cleaner condition than Western examples — though rarely at bargain prices anymore. Domestic units are 100V and require a transformer abroad, a real consideration on an instrument this valuable. In Japanese listings look for ローランド (Roland), ジュピター (Jupiter), and JP-8, and weigh condition terms heavily — 動作確認済み (tested working) and 整備済み (serviced) are important, while ジャンク (junk) and 未確認 (untested) warrant caution. Brrtz compares Japanese and Western listings in one scan so you can judge the global market for a piece this scarce.
