What it is

The Roland Juno-60, released in 1982, is the predecessor to the Juno-106 and, to many ears, the warmest of the line. Six voices, a single DCO each, a punchy analog filter, and Roland's famous chorus give it a rich, immediate sound that's a staple of pop, house, and synthwave. It predates MIDI — it uses Roland's DCB interface instead — which is the main practical difference from the 106, though its build and raw tone are widely adored.

Buying one used — what to check

The Juno-60 is generally robust and, unlike the 106, doesn't suffer the notorious 80017A voice-chip failures, which is part of why clean units command a premium. Age still shows in scratchy sliders and pots, worn switches, and keyboard contacts, and the chorus can get noisy — test it. The big practical question is connectivity: with only DCB and no MIDI, factor in a DCB-to-MIDI interface (like the Kenton unit) if you need to sequence it. Confirm all six voices sound even and the filter tracks smoothly.

Regional sourcing notes

As a Roland classic the Juno-60 is well-represented in Japan and often a good-value route to one, on Yahoo Auctions and Mercari. Domestic units are 100V and want a transformer abroad. In Japanese listings look for ローランド (Roland) and ジュノ or ジュノー (Juno), and read condition terms — 動作確認済み (tested working), 整備済み (serviced), 美品 (excellent), against ジャンク (junk) and 未確認 (untested). Because the 60 and 106 are often cross-listed and confused, a careful cross-market look pays off — Brrtz scans Japanese and Western sources together so you can compare the exact model and price in one pass.
