What it is
The Moog Minimoog — properly the Model D — is the monophonic analog synthesizer that defined what a synth could be. Introduced in 1970, it put three oscillators and Moog's celebrated 24 dB ladder filter into a single portable, performance-ready instrument, and its fat, vocal lead and bass tones run through five decades of records. Original units were built into the early 1980s; Moog Music reissued the Model D in 2016 and in later runs, so the name now spans both vintage and current production.
Buying one used — what to check
The first question is era: an early-1970s original, a late Norlin-era unit, and a modern reissue are three different instruments at three different price points, and listings don't always make the distinction clear. Vintage units are prized but high-maintenance — expect oscillator tuning drift, scratchy potentiometers, worn keyboard bushings and contacts, and tired pitch and mod wheels; many benefit from a proper calibration and service. Later originals and the reissues are considerably more stable, and the reissue adds modern conveniences like MIDI and a CV patchbay. For any vintage unit, ask about recent servicing and how well it holds tuning once warm — that's the real tell.
Regional sourcing notes
Vintage Minimoogs surface less often in Japan than Roland's home-grown gear, but they do appear on Yahoo Auctions and Mercari, and the reissues circulate domestically through the usual shops. Watch voltage in both directions: a US vintage unit is 117V, a Japanese-market unit is 100V, and neither runs happily on European mains without a transformer. In Japanese listings the instrument is written モーグ or, in older transliteration, ムーグ (Moog), alongside ミニモーグ (Minimoog) and モデルD (Model D); the same condition vocabulary applies — 動作確認済み (tested working), 整備済み (serviced), 美品 (excellent condition), against ジャンク (junk) and 未確認 (untested). Because the transliteration itself varies, a search that only looks for "Minimoog" in Latin script misses part of the market — one of the gaps Brrtz is designed to catch.
