What it is
The E-mu SP-1200, released in 1987, is the 12-bit sampling drum machine whose limitations became its legend. Just over ten seconds of total sampling time and a 12-bit converter with analog filtering give it a gritty, punchy character that defined an era of hip-hop, and producers built whole aesthetics around its constraints. It's a sampler and sequencer with sliders and pads rather than a keyboard instrument — a purpose-built groovebox that people still chase for one very specific sound.
Buying one used — what to check
Originals are scarce and valuable, so authenticity and condition are paramount. The sliders and pads wear with heavy use and can need cleaning or replacement; the floppy drive is a frequent failure point (emulator replacements exist); and the backup battery dies like any machine of its age. Test the sliders, every pad, the disk drive, and the outputs. Be aware of the landscape: Rossum Electro-Music (founded by E-mu's Dave Rossum) released an authorized SP-1200 reissue, and various software and hardware emulations exist — none of which are a vintage original, though titles may not say so. Given the values, insist on clear photos and a real account of condition.
Regional sourcing notes
The SP-1200 is American-built, so it appears in Japan less often than home-grown Akai or Roland gear — but it does surface on Yahoo Auctions and through specialist Japanese dealers, and interest there is strong. Voltage cuts both ways: US units are 117V, Japanese-market units 100V, so confirm which you're getting. In Japanese listings look for E-mu or イーミュー and SP-1200; the condition vocabulary is the same — 動作確認済み (tested working), 整備済み (serviced), 美品 (excellent), against ジャンク (junk) and 未確認 (untested). For a rare, pricey machine like this, Brrtz's single scan across Japanese and Western sources helps you see the whole market rather than one corner of it.
