What it is
The ARP 2600 is a semi-modular analog synthesizer introduced in 1971 — a self-contained patchable system with three oscillators, a slider for every parameter, a bank of patch points, and on most units a built-in spring reverb and speakers. Played without a single patch cable it's already a complete synth; patched, it opens into a small modular studio. It's one of the most recorded synthesizers in history, and Korg's reissues brought it back into current production.
Buying one used — what to check
With the 2600, the single most important detail is the filter. The earliest units used a 4012 filter — a close cousin of Moog's ladder design, which is what triggered the famous lawsuit — and ARP later switched to the 4072; the early 4012 units sound distinct and command a premium, so confirm which one a vintage listing actually has. Beyond that, the collector hierarchy runs from the earliest "Blue Marvin" and "Grey Meanie" cases through the more common later black-and-orange units. On any vintage unit, check the sliders (they get noisy and need cleaning), the patch jacks, and the internal speaker and reverb tank — and remember the keyboard (the 3620) was a separate piece, so a "2600" without a keyboard is common and priced accordingly. Korg's reissues (the full-size 2600 FS and the smaller 2600 M) are the stable, affordable way in, and shouldn't be confused with a vintage unit in a listing title.

Korg is a Japanese company, so the reissues are well-distributed across the domestic market and turn up regularly on Yahoo Auctions, Mercari, and through Japanese shops — often the cleanest route to a 2600 FS or 2600 M. Genuine vintage 2600s appear too, though less frequently and at collector prices. Voltage still applies: domestic units are 100V and need a transformer abroad. In Japanese listings, look for アープ (ARP) and 2600, or コルグ (Korg) for the reissues, and read the condition terms — 動作確認済み (tested working), 整備済み (serviced), 美品 (excellent), against ジャンク (junk) and 未確認 (untested).
