What it is
The Akai MPC3000, released in 1994, is the sampler-sequencer that anchored a golden era of hip-hop production. Designed by Roger Linn, it paired 16-bit sampling with a swing-savvy sequencer and those famous velocity-sensitive pads, and its workflow — chop, lay out on the pads, sequence, and let the timing feel do the rest — shaped the sound of countless records. It's a workstation, not a synth: no oscillators, just your samples, its sequencer, and its particular groove.
Buying one used — what to check
The MPC3000 is a 1990s computer at heart, so age shows in its subsystems. The backlit LCD often fails or dims and is a known replacement item; the floppy drive is a common weak point (many owners fit modern floppy-emulator drives); the battery that backs up memory dies; and the pad sensors can get uneven and need re-sensing or replacement. Test every pad for even response, the screen, and data storage. Note the variants and the surrounding family — the MPC60 before it and the MPC2000 and 2000XL after — plus the Vailixi OS mod that many units run; a listing should be clear about what it is and what's been serviced or upgraded.
Regional sourcing notes
Akai is Japanese, and MPCs are plentiful in Japan's used market — Yahoo Auctions, Mercari, and Hard Off list the 3000 and its siblings regularly, sometimes in clean condition and below Western prices. Domestic units are 100V and need a transformer abroad. In Japanese listings search アカイ (Akai) and MPC3000 or MPC-3000, and read the condition terms — 動作確認済み (tested working), 整備済み (serviced), 美品 (excellent), against ジャンク (junk) and 未確認 (untested); on an MPC junk frequently means a dead screen or floppy drive, both fixable. Brrtz scans Japanese and Western sources together so a serviced domestic unit shows up next to your local options.
